Cataract Surgery

A cataract is the opacity that develops in the lens of the eye. The lens is the part of the eye that is responsible for fine focusing. The lens of the eye consists of strong and transparent capsule that is filled with a clear gel like material. When the capsule becomes cloudy the light that enters through it becomes distorted or blocked, preventing it from reaching the retina, thus, reducing the vision. If you have cataracts and are having difficulties in your vision, your doctor will recommend surgery. There is no known cure for cataracts other than surgery. On the other hand, recent studies show that anti-oxidants (for example, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E) are cure for cataracts because it causes the delay of the development of cataracts.

Vision in early cataracts can be improved by changing the prescription of your eyeglass, or by using a magnifying lens, or stronger lighting for close work. However if the interference caused by cataracts are intense wherein it affects your everyday lifestyle such as reading, working, or driving. Cataract surgery is needed to correct that.

Cataract surgery is the most effective and commonly performed surgical procedure in the United States. Patients who undergo cataract surgery experience improved vision after the surgery. There are two procedures in cataract surgery. These are the phacoemulsification and the extracapsular surgery.

The aging process of every individual in this world brings about the development of cataracts. Cataract is derived from the Latin word “cataracta” which means “waterfall” due to the common perception that it is like looking through a waterfall if you have cataracts. Cataract is not a disease; it is a condition, a condition by which the crystalline lens of the eyes becomes blurry and cloudy. The eye’s crystalline lens is made up of protein and water. The protein is bonded in some way that permits the light to pass into the retina. When the bond changes and the protein clump together that is how cataracts are formed. These clumps will eventually block the light that passes through and has the opaque and cloudy appearance. If an individual has cataract, that individual’s vision would become blurry and hazy. Sometimes that certain individual would see halos around lamps and lights.

Canine cataracts are one of the most common eye problems among dogs. A cataract is the opacity or blurriness of the eye lens. It is a breakdown of the crystalline lens or its capsule. This breakdown leads to the loss of transparency and the ensuing reduction of the canine’s vision. Canine cataracts can range from small areas to complete cataracts. Canines that have complete cataracts suffer total loss of light transmission that results to blindness. Canine cataracts can occur from a variety of causes. This includes trauma, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, and spontaneous developmental abnormalities.
